UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Graphic Design

The Extended Diploma in Graphic Design is an exciting and challenging course for students. Whilst investigating a wide range of design disciplines, the course specialises in an extensive variety of graphic techniques, thereby allowing students to develop a portfolio that reflects their individuality and creative strengths. This can then be used as the basis for higher education or entry into the design industry.

  • Course Description

The studio is well equipped with some of the latest Apple Mac computers and you will receive training on industry standard software applications such as:

    • Adobe Photoshop

    • Adobe Illustrator

    • Adobe InDesign

    • Premier Pro

The learning environment mirrors a working studio and our approach is busy but relaxed - a place where students are encouraged to develop their own learning. Within this environment, important lessons are learnt about meeting deadlines and maintaining standards of high quality under pressure.

You will be required to continue with projects independently and it is expected that there will be 10-12 hours independent study undertaken at home each week. Teaching methods vary from small group exercises, whole class teaching and one-to-one guidance.

  • Entry Requirements

    You will need:

    • 5 or more GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or higher, including English, Maths and a creative-based subject

    • A portfolio of creative work for interviews

    Or:

    • A relevant Level 2 qualification
    • GCSE English or Maths at Grade 4 (C) or higher

Substantial Level 2 vocational qualifications in relevant subjects will be accepted as GCSE equivalent (with the exception of English and Maths).

You will be invited to an interview to help us ensure the course is right for you.

  • Course Length

Full-time courses at the college are generally 3-4 days per week (you may be in an extra day if you are resitting English and/or Maths). All students are expected to complete study hours in the Learning Resource Centre and at least 30 hours work experience on top of their college hours.

Success story

Emma Pegrum

Art and Design Level 3 (Extended Diploma)

Emma chose to study at CWA as she knew the college has a very strong art & design department.

“I learnt so much while at CWA, from being in the print studio to photography and graphic design. I will always remember how encouraging the tutors were and how they would push you to do your best.

Studying at CWA had benefited me a lot when moving on to the next stage in my life. The grade I achieved and the stills I learnt at CWA helped me get into university, as they were looking for someone with a wide understanding of art processes and techniques.”

Emma now works for a small family run, interior design company, making curtains and blinds along with smaller accessories such as cushions, bed runners and curtain tie backs.

Emma says "I love my job as it is creative, I am always making things and it is never boring.
