If you are interested in pursuing a career in engineering, this course is for you, providing advanced study to enable you to progress into employment or further study.

  • Course Description

    This qualification has been developed to provide you with an advanced knowledge and understanding of the practices of engineering technologies.

    Units and modules

    You will study the below units:

    • Engineering and environmental health and safety
    • Maintenance engineering principles
    • Computer aided design (CAD) techniques
    • Engineering mathematics
    • Metal inert gas, metal active gas (MIG/MAG) welding
    • Maintenance of mechanical systems
    • General engineering maintenance techniques
    • Mechanical engineering principles
    • Engineering design process
    • Engineering communications
  • Entry Requirements

    You will need:

    • GCSE maths at grade 5
    • 4 other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above including English

    If you are aged 19 or older, relevant industry experience may be accepted.

    You will be invited to an interview to help us ensure the course is right for you.

  • Course Length

    Full-time courses at the college are generally 3-4 days per week (you may be in an extra day if you are resitting English and/or Maths). All students are expected to complete study hours in the Learning Resource Centre and at least 30 hours work experience on top of their college hours.

    * Certain courses may have additional costs to cover trips or DBS checks, and for some courses you will be expected to purchase additional items such as uniform or equipment.

    Though this course is free for those aged 16-18, there may be additional fees related to the programme, such as additional equipment or uniform, trips, DBS checks and work placement costs. Further information will be sent to all applicants before enrolment.

    Information on Fees and Financial Help

    Learners with an active Education, Health & Care Plan

    If you are aged 19 - 24 at the start of your course and have an active Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), any course up to and including level 3 will be fully-funded by the government. This means you will not have a course fee to pay and any equipment considered essential to complete your course will be provided by the college.

  • Additional Information

    What qualification will I achieve?

    EAL Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies (Level 3)

    This is a two-year programme. You will work towards the subsidiary diploma qualification in the first year of the course and will have the opportunity to work towards either the diploma or the extended diploma in the second year.

    Students aged 16 to 18 who do not already have GCSE qualifications in maths and/or English at grades 4 (C) - 9 (A*) will take qualifications in English and/or maths as part of their vocational study programme - this is a government requirement.

    How is my course assessed?

    There will be a series project assignments and tests over the duration of the course.
