[gallery ids="2968,2970,2969"] On Monday 17th November, students from the College of West Anglia, were given the opportunity to get expert road safety advice from the county’s driving experts and emergency services, at a road safety event held at their King’s Lynn Campus. The event was organised by the college as part of National Road Safety Week (17-23 November 2014), as road crashes and casualties are the biggest non-medical cause of death and serious injury among children and young people. Representatives from Norfolk Fire Service, Norfolk Police Constabulary, Caroline’s Driving School and the Young Driver Education Team gave talks and demonstrations to highlight the dangers facing drivers on our regions roads. Students were able to see the effects of using a mobile phone while driving, in the ‘Driving Text Challenge’ in the police Lotus simulator. Participants were asked to try texting a friend while driving, to see the negative and sometimes fatal effect it could have on their driving ability. Norfolk Fire Service re-enacted a car crash scene, giving a full demonstration from arrival at the scene to using cutting equipment to remove the vehicle roof, before extracting a casualty. CWA Admissions Advisor, Lucas Cooper helped the Fire Service by playing the driver for the demonstration. After being extracted from the vehicle he said “Even though the incident wasn’t real, it was still scary not being able to see around me as the cutting equipment was being operated. It’s a situation that no one ever wants to be in”. Student Support Advisor and event organiser, Sylvia Finnigan said “Road safety is an important issue and can affect passengers and drivers alike. Many of our students are or soon to be young drivers, so it is great for them to get professional driving advise from the experts.” Students also had the opportunity to talk to Norfolk Constabulary’s young driver team with demonstrations of their police vehicles. Caroline’s Driving School were on hand to offer driving advice and how to check your vehicle is road worthy. The scrap vehicle for the demonstration was kindly provided by Mick Denton Scrap Yard in Wisbech.
