A College of West Anglia engineering student has been recognised for their dedication, creativity and commitment to their studies after being named the recipient of this year’s David Bretten Endeavour in Engineering Award. Joseph Gant was presented with the prestigious award, which celebrates engineering students who demonstrate ingenuity, logical thinking and a strong commitment to personal development.
The award was established by the family of the late David Bretten, a former engineering student at the college and well-known local engineer and entrepreneur. Through the award, the Bretten family aims to inspire and support future generations of engineers while continuing David’s legacy of innovation and problem-solving.
Open to engineering students across the College of West Anglia, the award recognises those who have shown determination, resilience and a passion for the subject throughout their studies. Joseph was selected for his commitment to engineering and the progress he has made during his time at the College.
Tiffany Baldwin, at the College of West Anglia said, “Joseph has excelled in the first year of his Engineering T Level, achieving excellent academic results and producing high-quality coursework. During his industry placement, he has also become a trained maintenance engineer at a local company. Joseph and his teammates created a stand demonstrating renewable technologies for the opening of the new Green Skills building, which attracted strong interest and engagement from those attending. Teamwork is an important quality for any engineer, and Joseph has consistently shown that he is ready to support others and contribute to shared success.”
Daughter of David Bretten, Sally Reid who presented the award to Joseph said, “This award means a great deal to our family as it honours my father’s legacy and his lifelong passion for engineering, which began during his time at the College of West Anglia. We created it to encourage and celebrate the next generation of engineers, and Joseph embodies everything the award represents through his commitment, achievement and enthusiasm for the subject. It was a pleasure to meet him and hear about his aspirations, and I hope this recognition gives him confidence as he begins his career.”
The David Bretten Endeavour in Engineering Award includes a £500 prize and is judged by members of the Bretten family. Students are assessed on their technical ability, creativity, problem-solving skills and dedication to achieving their goals.
The College of West Anglia offers a range of engineering courses designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, practical experience and industry skills needed to progress into employment, apprenticeships and higher-level study.
