The College of West Anglia's Visual Arts department at the Isle campus in Wisbech celebrated yet another successful year and rounded of a week of shows with an award ceremony held at the campus. Students, staff, families and friends gathered with staff to applaud their achievements over the past year with prizes presented by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wisbech, Councillor Michael Hill and Mrs Jane Hill, and Stephen Barclay Conservative MP for North East Cambridgeshire.
The excellent work produced by the students was displayed in the college's ArtSpace, a new and impressive gallery and studio and all spent an enjoyable and vibrant evening looking at the art and designs. In addition to the work celebrated by CWA students budding designers and photographers, aged 11 – 16, were invited to demonstrate their flair and creativity by entering three competitions run by the visual arts department.
The 'fashion challenge competition' which has been an annual event for several years was won by Jemima Wakefield from Spalding High School. Entrants were asked to design a 'summer day dress inspired by 1950s clothing'. Once again the standard was extremely high and Jemima's brilliant design was brought to life and modelled on the catwalk at the fashion show held this year for the first time at Elme Hall Hotel, Wisbech. Jemima was presented with her prize, a sewing machine by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Michael Hill and the Mayoress, Mrs Jane Hill. Spalding High School was the winner of the £100 prize for the school with the best series of designs.
Spalding High School also scooped the prize for the best series of designs in the art and design competition to design a t-shirt to illustrate cultural and ethnic diversity. Judges had a difficult decision but decided Annie Taylor's design was both a bold and exciting response to the theme. Annie's design was printed onto a t-shirt which she will receive together with a cheque for £50.
Tom White from the King's School, Peterborough submitted a photograph of Lincoln Cathedral for the photography competition. Tom had worked hard to achieve the angles and detail in low light to produce a striking image. The photograph was mounted on canvas and presented to him with a cheque for £50 at the end of show celebration awards evening. The King's School, Peterborough also won the £100 prize for the best series of photographs.
