“When I started my degree, I wanted to learn more about the subject I was passionate about, especially digital security and computer networks, two of the major areas in computer science. At the time I knew I wanted to do something inside the industry but was unsure. UcWA appealed to me as it was very local. I was unsure about going to university, but when it was explained to me that I would be studying here at the college, an area I knew well with lecturers I knew, I felt more confident. I don’t regret my decision at all.
The course was a general computer science degree, so it covered a vast variety of modules including programming, operating systems, databases, data analysis. My peers in the group were amazing and I remember all the hours we spent together doing the network routing lab work.
When I completed my degree, I was approached by the college to join on as a skills tutor, to put on sessions for students who were struggling with certain subjects. I was very quickly promoted to be a part-time lecturer before securing a full-time lecturer post in the computing department. I teach Levels 2, 3 and 5 and I am also the course director of Level 3 Computing Year 1.
To anyone thinking of returning to learning as an adult, I would say don’t be put off coming back into education to retrain or upskill, we are never too old to learn something new. Humans at our core are inquisitive species. CWA and UcWA are very supportive places to learn.”
