Adults Part-TimeExperience the health and social care sector first-hand this October half-term with our FREE masterclasses! Pick any (or all!) of our five one day workshops to learn real skills, build confidence and explore career paths in our fully equipped School of Nursing Studies at the King's Lynn campus.
These non-accredited one-day sessions give you practical insight into specific Health & Social Care skills. You can attend one, several or all! Each day will run from 9am - 3pm during October half-term (week commencing 27th October).
They are designed to build confidence, provide hands-on experience in our School of Nursing Studies and spark interest in careers in Health & Social Care.
Spend the day learning how to record vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature while practising hospital bed making and good hand hygiene. You will use PPE correctly, gain consent, care for catheters and support patients to eat and drink. The session also covers moving and handling vulnerable patients, monitoring blood glucose, communicating effectively at the bedside and supporting a breathless patient, including safe oxygen administration.
This masterclass focuses on first-response techniques. You will deal with major bleeding through simulated demonstrations using robotic mannequins, administer an epi-pen for severe allergic reactions, manage blocked airways and provide an initial response for epilepsy. You will also follow the principles of basic life support, assess head injuries and learn to recognise the signs of a stroke.
Explore the basics of skin health and anatomy, learn about different types of wounds and their treatments and practise beginner wound care. The session includes preventing wounds and pressure sores, promoting good nutrition and hydration and taking part in a practical bandaging masterclass.
Take a virtual tour of the brain to understand the different types of dementia and examine common causes while learning how to promote healthy living. You will discover how to provide person-centred care to help people with dementia live well, recognise signs of confusion and communicate effectively with those experiencing symptoms.
Prepare for employment by creating a strong CV and crafting a job-application statement that meets employer expectations. You will practise interview techniques in our interview lab, learn practical methods for managing stress, plan your career across a range of Health & Social Care roles to find your best fit and receive coaching tips from former students who have successfully entered the sector.
