The knowledge and skills needed to provide dementia care has never been more necessary than it is now. This qualification will help you understand what the condition entails, as well as teach how best to support those who are affected by it. The course covers essential topics such as positive communication techniques and person-centred approaches that take into account an individual's needs at every stage of their journey through this difficult time in life. Learn how you can best help them in their time of need with professional yet personable attention during the illness phase too when they may be experiencing symptoms like confusion due to forgetting things previously known just yesterday.
Unit 1: Dementia awareness This unit covers precisely what dementia is, the most common types of dementia and the causal factors associated with them. Also explored is how others can have a positive impact on the individual with dementia through a variety of different techniques
Unit 2: Person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia Build the knowledge and understanding required to enable an individual with dementia to experience a sense of such security and well-being. The vital role of carers in such a scenario is covered.
Unit 3: Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia This unit will raise awareness of the different communication needs and limitations of individuals with dementia in order to encourage positive interaction
Unit 4: Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care An introduction to equality, diversity and inclusion as ideas to aspire to, which are also all important when practicing the person-centred approach
Unit 5: Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person-centred approach This unit helps understand the range of cutting edge medications available to, and appropriate for, individuals with dementia, exploring specific needs that individuals may have when receiving medication
Unit 6: Understand behaviour in the context of dementia This unit looks at the different behaviours individuals display once diagnosed with dementia and how to respond to particular types of behaviour
Unit 7: Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care Explore how engaging in social activities in order to enhance mental, physical and social well-being can be amazing benefit to individuals with dementia

Depending on your age, course, educational history and personal circumstances, there may be options available for you to receive a course fully-funded by the government. Our fee calculator will help give you an idea on whether you'll be able to have your course fee waived or covered by an Advanced Learner Loan.
If you are aged 19 - 24 at the start of your course and have an active Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), any course up to and including level 3 will be fully-funded by the government. This means you will not have a course fee to pay and any equipment considered essential to complete your course will be provided by the college.
