Maria took the course Introduction to Carpentry for DIY - Part-Time at CWA. Maria loves working with wood, she has built her own fireplace and is currently making raised beds for her garden as she is a wheelchair user. By taking the course Maria hoped to learn more about different joins, angles, to make her woodwork look more professional.
CWA is the closet college to Maria, but also after she had talked to the tutor’s regarding the course she knew it was the best college for her. The tutor worked with her regarding the height of the work bench, and how best they could help make her learning easier. They worked with her before the course started and during the classes.
During her course she learned how to make a cross and how to join the two together, then made a bird cage. She enjoyed learning about the right tools to use and seeing the items come together once making them.
When Maria was asked about her memories at CWA she said “The College was very accommodating to my needs as a disabled wheelchair user. They didn’t tell me what I couldn’t do, just helped me achieve what I could. The carpentry tutors worked with me to work around the height of my wheelchair so I could get close enough to the bench to work. I would like to say a big thank you to Jane Burton and Micheal King for the way they made that course a smooth process in learning for me.”
