I chose to come to college instead of sixth form as I believe that the College of West Anglia has a very productive work environment. Whereas, I felt sixth form was an extension of school, college feels like you have more creative control over your projects. You are treated with respect by staff and fellow students.
I chose this course as it is a specific field which can enable me to go on to higher education if I wish too. I like having creative control in choosing how I present my projects that best represents my own strengths and interests.
I’m really enjoying my course so far. It is a step up from GCSE level, but having all my time allocated to one course does alleviate a lot of stress. I have made some great friends at college already and I am excited for the coming two years.
My course is made up of planning, research, problem solving, skill development, creation and reflection. One thing that has really stood out is the tutorials and guidance presented by my tutors. It does truly show that there is always more to learn.
The highlight of my course so far is working in both digital and physical, tangible mediums. It did surprise me to be working with clay and ceramics in a graphics design course, but it has become my favourite part of the course, reflecting on the history of graphic design and creating something physical from it.
To someone interested in the course, I would tell them to think about it carefully as you should for any big decision. Having said that, I would not hesitate to recommend this course. It is not all drawing, but the skills you learn on the course are invaluable.
I have been most impressed with the facilities and the specialised areas for working. We are all accommodated for with a suite of Apple mac computers, using Adobe design software. Additionally, there are specific rooms for ceramics and art.
