Celebrating its long standing commitment to training and development in partnership with the college, Dodd Group has named Alex Goodman as its Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2018.
Following a hotly contested competition in which managers from Dodd Group’s UK wide business had to nominate their best apprentices and adult trainees, Alex’s mature attitude and commitment to carrying out all tasks to the best of his ability made him a stand out candidate. Alex has successfully completed the first year of his NVQ Level 3 Electro-technical Apprenticeship at Dodd Group’s Kings Lynn branch and the college.
Alex’s supervising electricians and managers have commented on his positive attitude and abilities. He has quickly earned a reputation of being keen to learn and actively seeks out new work as he completes his allocated tasks. An early sign of Alex’s commitment was his investment in a moped to make the 10-mile journey from his home to the office come rain or shine. To date, Alex has had only a single day off work due to sickness and has achieved 100% attendance on his college course.
Alex attends the college on a day-release basis where he is studying towards a raft of C&G qualifications.
“All participating tutors who work with Alex have found him to be a truly inspiring apprentice who is producing an excellent standard of practical formation of electrical enclosure systems and is meticulous in the glanding of cabling systems. Written work is showing that Alex has the potential to gain great results in the forthcoming future assignments and all exam elements of the qualification.”

Alex’s on-the-job training is taking place on challenging industrial and utility sites with significant health, safety and environmental risks and responsibilities. To date he has worked on a long-term project at a local chemical works, as well as numerous water and sewage sites, BT telephone exchanges and the Victorian swing bridge. These projects have introduced Alex to the design, installation and testing of mains distribution, plant control and instrumentation equipment in a wide variety of situations. Alex also spends time in our panel shop where he has quickly acquired the practical skills necessary to assemble, wire and test telemetry panels – tasks that require high levels of precision and attention to detail.
The competition was judged by a panel which included John Kavanagh, Dodd Group’s Managing Director who commented
“It is the likes of Alex that represent the future of our industry. The national skills shortage is well documented but we believe that by encouraging such pro-active people as Alex into the industry we can protect our business. He should be proud of his achievement as the standard of entries this year was particularly high and I look forward to monitoring his future progress.”
The Mayor of Kings Lynn Cllr Nick Daubney, presented the award to Alex when he recently visited Dodd Group’s regional office. He was accompanied by the Mayoress Mrs Cheryl Daubney. Adrian Cobb, Regional Director, and Chris Watson, Branch Manager were also on hand to congratulate Alex.
The award presentation was the icing on the cake for Alex who had passed his driving test earlier that morning. All in all a good day at the office for this talented young man.
