On Thursday 8^th November, Daniel Laurie, best known for playing the role of Reggie Jackson in Call the Midwife, delivered an inspirational careers speech to college students and staff. Twenty-three-year-old Daniel delivered his speech to a packed lecture theatre of foundation studies and performing arts students at the college's King’s Lynn campus. In the speech, Daniel played a collection of clips from Call the Midwife, discussed his own career path and answered questions from students on a variety of subjects. Daniel, who has Down’s syndrome, played the character of Reggie in the TV programme Call the Midwife. The heartbreaking storyline that gripped the nation saw Reggie’s mother, Ivy (Birds of a Feather’s star Kate Williams) die, leaving her son unable to take care of himself with nowhere to live.   Daniel said: “I’ve loved playing Reggie and showing everyone everything that people like Reggie and I can bring to others’ lives.” Daniel also played the role of Jamie in Ruth Jones’ and David Peet’s star-studded comedy drama, Stella, and took the title role in BBC Radio 4’s serilialisation of the classic Dickens tale, Barnaby Rudge. Daniel said “I love being an actor and I would certainly recommend it as a job, they say all you have to do is speak up, but really most of the hard work comes before the audition. Preparation is vital, preparation is everything, be prepared.” “I have had to work hard to learn my lines, make my speech clearer and my body stronger, but when I’m actor, I’m appreciated, when I’m acting, I’m the same as everyone else.” Daniel juggles three jobs in his spare time. He is a keen footballer and works as an FA qualified coach, an assistant drama teacher and helps at after-school clubs and primary schools. Daniel said: “I have three jobs and I love them all equally. I wish you all as much luck as I have had and as my grandfather said, “Just keep on keeping on”. All of you can do it, too. Just be yourself, follow your heart and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks or says.” Foundation work placement and careers coordinator and organiser of the event, Gemma Doughty, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Daniel here today to deliver a careers speech to the students. He showed them not only the inspirational work that he has done so far, but that anything is possible with hard work and commitment.” College principal, David Pomfret, said: “We were delighted to welcome Daniel to the college today. Not only did he inspire and entertain in equal measure, but he gave our foundation studies students practical careers advice and showed them the possibilities available to those who work hard to achieve their goals.”
