Christmas conference showcases social science provision at UcWA
The social science team at University Centre West Anglia held a Christmas conference on the 14th December 2016, to showcase what King’s Lynn’s psychosocial degree has to offer.
The day consisted of current students presenting their ongoing dissertation research including, ‘The Virtual Self’ portrayed in video games and ‘The Body Image’. This was followed by an introduction to psychosocial topics and disciplines studied on the BAPS Course including deviance, investigative criminology, sociology, sexuality and psychology. Those in attendance also had the chance to get career advice to help them enter the world of work, on completion of the course.
Although studying for a degree is a serious matter, course director Dr Janet Jones, feels that the “students need a sense of enjoyment and friendship as part of their educational experience”. By holding a Christmas conference, the social science team hoped to help demonstrate the 'lighter' side of study in a friendly and congenial environment, especially as the college now has a brand new university centre dedicated to higher education provision.
She said: “Over the last 20 years working as the course director for the BA (hons) Psychosocial Studies, I have often taught the parents of the new applicants, and their friends, so often people find out by word of mouth how beneficial it is to study here within their local community by a highly experienced and dedicated social science team.
“We also hope that by giving the students, both past and present, the opportunity to talk about their own research it will enlighten and inspire everyone to consider post graduate studies and future career opportunities after successfully completing their undergraduate degrees here in King's Lynn.”
