College attracts top sports star
The College of West Anglia at King’s Lynn received a special visit from ParalympicsGB football star Alistair Patrick-Heselton after winning an Active Colleges competition.
Active Colleges is Sport England’s £25 million National Lottery fund which aims to help more college students play sport.
It looks to encourage an increase in regular participation (at least 30 minutes per week) in sport by further education students across the country.
The College of West Anglia won a visit from Alistair Patrick-Heselton to its Lynnsport campus after submitting a fantastic story to Sport England about one of their outstanding projects that has encouraged more of their students to take up sport.
“Fantastic story” was how Sport England described the initiative.
Alistair is one of Sport England’s Sporting Champions – a team of current and retired elite athletes, many of whom competed at London 2012.
On the day Alistair provided our English Speakers of Other Languages, Childcare and sports students with an inspiring motivational speech about how he has overcome a tragic traffic accident to compete at a national level.
Sara Edwards, the college’s sports development officer at the Lynnsport campus said: “Not only did Alistair provide students with a motivational speech he also provided some of the students with a master class in football.
A variety of students took part, even those who have never played before.
Feedback from our students was extremely positive with one student saying “A True Inspiration”.
Alistair was really impressed with the students and how determined they were.
He said: “Great group of focused students developing into tomorrow’s leaders”.
He was also impressed with our facilities at Lynnsport and how approachable students were.
We would like to say a big thank you to Sport England and Sporting champions for organising Alistair’s visit and to all staff and students who helped and took part in the day, said Sara.
Most of all we would like to thank Alistair for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit.
