Over 100 staff, students from the Sports Campus came together with families and friends to celebrate the outstanding sporting and academic achievements from throughout the year.
College alumnus, Wayne Griffiths, hosted the evening, which saw over 25 award-winners crowned on the night in a number of categories, from overall team of the year to most improved player of the year, across a wide range of disciplines, including football, netball and basketball.
During the evening, guest speakers, former college sport’s student and professional coach for Peterborough United, Matty Dye, and Community and Schools Sports coach for KLFC, Sam Robinson spoke about their journeys from beginning sports courses at the college to realising their ambitions within careers within the sport’s industry.
Matty Dye:
‘My journey started with CWA seven years ago, studying on a sports course, as well as being part of the elite football programme. After that I went on to Lincoln University to study for a degree in sports coaching and development. Age 24, I became one of the youngest people in the country to secure a job as the head of coaching for the Peterborough United youth training academy.
For anyone listening to my story tonight, remember, it’s going to take a lot of commitment and sacrifices to get where you want to be, but if you have the drive then go for it.’
Event organiser and programme manager of sport at the college, Scott Leadley said of the students trumps and achievements throughout the year:
‘2018-19 has been a very successful year for the CWA Sports Campus and I’m extremely proud of and congratulate our students on their commitment, standard of work and achievements.
We focus on giving our students the best possible chance of moving on to further education or training and achieving their career goals, with many of our students gaining international scholarships and places at top universities, so we are excited to see what our students here tonight will achieve in the future.’
