Developing Workskills Students from College of West Anglia were invited to London this week after winning a prestigious leadership skills challenge as part of the Peter Jones Foundation’s nationwide enterprise programme.

Ryan Gowler and Freddie Depear, accompanied by Developing Workskills Course Director, Gemma Doughty and Learning Support Officer, Emma McGregor, attended the awards ceremony at IET Savoy Place on Wednesday to receive recognition on behalf of their cohort. The students were honored for their impactful petition calling for quieter fireworks and tighter restrictions of firework sales to help protect animals and support people within the neurodiverse community.

The petition has grown significantly since its launch and now has more than 5,800 signatures. It continues to gather momentum, reflecting the students’ dedication to raising awareness and driving positive change in their local community and beyond.

The visit began with a tour of the Tycoon enterprise stalls, where Ryan and Freddie had the opportunity to meet young entrepreneurs, explore innovative products, and engage with students from across the country. The group also proudly represented CWA as former runners up in their Tycoon category two years ago.

This was followed by the main awards ceremony which featured an inspiring list of guest speakers. Ryan and Freddie were presented with their award by entrepreneur, Peter Jones and Adrine Allen, founder of AA Educates, who commended their thoughtful campaign and leadership in advocating for an important community issue.

Gemma Doughty said  I was so proud of both Ryan and Freddie. They were polite confident, and great representatives for their previous course and for CWA. They said it was a fantastic and unforgettable experience.’

Learning Support Officer, Emma McGregor said ‘It was a fabulous opportunity to be able to see some of our students being rewarded for working hard, we all had a fantastic day.’

Ryan and Freddie’s recognition at the Peter Jones Foundation Awards highlights the value of empowering students to lead change and develop their confidence, communication skills and sense of initiative.
