Eleven King's Lynn students scoop catering prizes
The College of West Anglia swept the board in two top competitions for budding chefs held both regionally and nationally at the weekend.
Having previously won through two heats at King’s Lynn, Sam Jordan, 17, from Wisbech, stole the show on Saturday when he won the district final of the Rotary Young Chef competition at Suffolk One College in Ipswich, beating six other young chefs.
Sam, a Level 2 Diploma in Professional Sam Jordan is now going forward to the Regional Final at Westminster Kingsway College this Saturday.
He cooked a three-course meal in two hours and if he is successful at the weekend he goes to the national final at Dundee College on Saturday, April 26.
While Sam was achieving success in Ipswich, ten of his colleagues were on the winning trail in London.
They took the first three places, with the other seven earning medals in a competition staged at West Kingsway College, London.
They were each tasked with making a cake.
It is the second time in three years students from the College of West Anglia have won the competition, which is organised by the Craft Guild of Chefs.
Winner was Kimberely Allen, 17, from Narborough, with Sarah Chamberlain, 19, Clenchwarton, second and Laura Vincent, 16, from Dereham third. They received a medal and certificate.
King’s Lynn Trinity Rotary Club had organised the original competition which Sam won at his college.
He had to spend two hours preparing a three-course healthy meal for, which had to cost less than £15.
The winning menu Sam prepared on Saturday was:
Starter: Pea soup with pan fried sea bream and poached quail egg; main course: Peking duck breast with herbed crust, spinach purée, sweet pepper oil and confit of shallots; Dessert: Zabaglione (an Italian custard) with poached peaches, apricot puree and amoretti biscuits.
