Thanks to an animal management course at the College of West Anglia Cambridge Campus, a Bury St Edmund student is now pursuing her dream career working with dolphins.
Gemma Beckett, 19, is currently following a two year Foundation Degree in Marine Conservation at Cornwall College, Newquay. The course consists of a variety of subjects including ecology of aquatic systems, marine science and surveys techniques.
Gemma participates in a large variety of fieldwork, including creating her own investigative studies and is learning about the marine system as a whole and all that is within it.
Miss Beckett’s said the interactive and engaging lessons her lecturers used to present, have aided her success so far. She said her tutors were always there to help and get the best out of learners.
Gemma said the practical elements of the course allowed her to get so much more out of her qualification. She said: “It’s always interesting, and fun at the same time; in my second year I managed to train a sheep to complete an assault course!
“CWA is an ideal college for those students that would like to continue furthering their studies and have a career with animals. It made me even more determined to follow my dreams and turn them into reality.”
From a young age, Gemma dreamt of working with dolphins and exploring the oceans. She intends to take her studies to postgraduate level.
She said: “I would say CWA is the best place you can go in the area for animal management courses. I loved every second of my time there and I wish I could do it all over again! It has helped me follow my dream and gave me confidence in my own abilities, and the chance to meet like-minded individuals that have helped further my academic and vocational development.”
