Adults looking for help and guidance to get back into education are being given support with free courses being run at the Isle and Wisbech campuses of the College of West Anglia. It could help them follow in the footsteps of Roger Smith who left school some 30 years ago and earned a first-class honours degree by going to the college. Routes to Learning is a course to give learners who are aged over 19 years old the opportunity to re-engage with education and gain a range of skills to progress to further study or employment. The course lasts for ten weeks and is scheduled to take place around school hours. The course at the Isle campus at Wisbech gives learners the opportunity to obtain qualifications in: English functional skills at entry, level 1 or level 2; Maths functional skills at entry, level 1 or level 2; Text processing qualification; An introduction to business and administration skills; Study skills and tutorial. Course days at the Isle campus are Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting on Monday 28th April 2014. The course at King's Lynn also gives learners the opportunity to obtain qualifications in: English functional skills at entry, level 1 or level 2; Maths functional skills at entry, level 1 or level 2; Text processing qualification; a choice of an introduction to business and administration skills; an introduction to science; an introduction psychology/sociology (depending on numbers); Study skills and tutorial. Course days at King's Lynn campus are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday starting on Tuesday 29th April. The aim is to help mature learners get the skills, or refresh their skills, in order for them to progress to full-time courses in a range of vocational studies and Access to Higher Education courses which can then lead to further training, employment or even degree programmes. Roger Smith said: “Having left school over 30 years ago, I felt a refresher would be advisable and it would give me the opportunity to confirm this was what I wanted to do. “The broad range of subjects studied on the programme rekindled my interest and helped me decide which course to take at access level. “I found the Routes To Learning course gave me the support, confidence and skills necessary to progress.” He went to study a BA in history and sociology at the college and completed with a first-class honours degree.” The campus at King’s Lynn is open as normal during the Easter holiday.
