Callum Johnson, former student at the Isle campus of the College of West Anglia, was presented with an award from Prince Michael of Kent proving he is one of the best in the country for his motor vehicle skills. He was awarded the coveted second place in a national competition which took him to the glittering presentation ceremony in front of the Prince and other VIP guests. His triumph left him full of praise for the support he had received from the college and his lecturer. He was shortlisted for the final three outstanding achievers in the competition organised by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). He finished runner-up in the paint category from some 23 students nationwide involved in different motor vehicle trades.. The awards saw 90,000 students competing for the different engineering awards. It is not the first time this years his skills have been recognised on a national stage. Earlier this year the 18-year-old came fourth in the Worldskills awards, in which his skills at vehicle painting war recognised. He was a student at the Isle campus in Wisbech before landing a job with a town garage. He is now seeking another garage job. Bob Whalley, his lecturer and mentor at the college, said Callum’s award was a huge achievement with so many students competing for the honours. The presentations were held at Fanshaws, a Jacobean-style conference centre in Hertfordshire, which is the home of the IMI. He was in the category for outstanding technical student – paint. As well as presenting the major awards HRH Prince Michael of Kent, addressed the audience. Callum was full of praise for tutor Bob Whalley and the college at Wisbech: He said: “He and the college helped me to achieve so much.” The college has a growing reputation for its motor vehicle workshop tuition, with two students even travelling from as far away as Haverhill in Suffolk for classes.
