Security students at the Wisbech campus have had a taste of working in the security profession, after lending a hand around campus, for work experience.
This is the third year that the concept has ran at the campus, with numbers growing from just three students in the first year, to more than 20 this time around.
Students have been developing the following skills:
• Radio / voice procedure
• Conflict management skills
• Both verbal and written communication skills
• Conducting detailed security patrols around the campus
• The ability to reinforce the college's zero tolerance to not wearing of appropriate lanyards, and the reinforcing of the expected code of conduct from both students, and staff
• Time-keeping
• Enhancing their team-building skills
• Re-affirmation of the essential need for a hierarchy within any substantially large organisation.
• Improved self-respect and humility
• Tolerance and understanding
• Problem solving
Paul Norman, security guard at Wisbech, said: “We asked students to turn up on time for work at 08:45 in suitable security attire. Those that took part all said they enjoyed their time with us and the feedback we received from staff was brilliant. I am impressed at what a high calibre of students the uniformed services department has and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the team in coming years.”
Adrian Kent, Course director for level one and three uniformed services, said: "I’d like to extend my thanks to the professional approach by our security staff at the Wisbech Campus, for ensuring our students got the maximum benefit out of their time on security operations. Our students not only thoroughly enjoyed their experience, but have learnt a whole host of additional skills.”
Liutaurus Puckorius, a student on the course, said: “As part of my course, we have to do 30 hours of voluntary work. I enjoyed my time with the security team at the college and found the job roles to be quite interesting. One of my main roles was to check lanyards were being worn. I enjoyed my experience and would recommend it to other students.”
