netball The College of West Anglia Sports Campus is home to some of the most talented athletes in West Norfolk and Fenland.  Since the move to Alive Lynnsport four years ago, the sports provision at the college has gone from strength to strength and CWA now boasts academies in football for men and women, basketball, rugby and netball. Alongside the core team sports, high achieving individuals are able to join the sports academy and in recent years CWA have helped to develop a number of elite sports performers such as: Danielle Durrant -  professional kite surfer, Adam Higher – GB rowing talent squad, Barbara Parker – Olympic runner, Dan Naylor – professional boxer. CWA Sports Academy boasts numerous other high profile graduates including: Dom Dwyer – professional footballer (Kansas City, MLS), Jack Friend – professional footballer (Peterborough United), Patrick Manifold – professional basketball player in Australia.   This year we have again recruited the best local talent with all academies. From the current teams, the ones to watch are: Luke Huggins, Tony Murray and Vytau Girdzius– currently with Fury senior team; Dylan Edge, Alpha Jalo, Kieran Shipp, Eoin McQuaid – King’s Lynn Town FC; Nick Castellan - Swaffam Town FC; Ebony Wiseman – Norwich City Ladies; Adam Jarvis – Dereham Town; Alfie Burton – Bedford Blues elite development squad; Ollie Pocket – West Norfolk rugby team; Irvidas Juskys – Lithuania U18 rugby international   Other top athletes at the sports campus include: Chelsea Munday – Kick Boxing World Champion; Elliott Holland – 400m Runner 8th at U20 level in the UK; Rochelle Woods – 2nd in the Billiards World Championship; Aigars Zusters – Ice Hockey, Lithuania U18’s; Regan Simper – County Bowls; Sam Slater – King’s Lynn Gymnastics Club (7th at British Championships).   All sports academy students combine professional coaching from highly qualified and experienced coaches with strength and conditioning, nutrition, and performance analysis as part of an athlete development programme with their core educational programme. The success of the sports campus is underpinned by an excellent coaching team including: Dan Buhlemann – Elite football head coach; Jamie Buhlemann – Elite football girls head coach; Matthew Dye – Football coach; James Bamfield – CWA Fury basketball academy head coach; Simon Leader – CWA rugby academy head coach; Sara Edwards – CWA netball academy head coach Sports academy teams and students have had great successes of late, with only last year Elite football men’s team winning the AoC Sport League and reaching the semi-final of the national ESFA U18 Cup.  The Elite football girls’ team won the AoC Sport League and the East Regional 7-a-side reaching the National Finals and placing 5th.  This year looks another exciting year with CWA Fury basketball academy already winning the AoC Sport East Region tournament and qualifying for the national finals later in the year. Programme manager for sport, Tommy Goode, said: “It is really exciting to see the best sporting talent in West Norfolk and Fenland attending the sports campus in a diverse range of sports.  It is always rewarding when you see what some of the talent has gone on to achieve and we are hopeful that many more of our current crop of students will move on to successful sporting careers.”
