Student Jake Betteridge has won equipment worth more than £1,000 which will help others in the future on the motor vehicle course at the College of West Anglia in King’s Lynn. Jake, 18, who is also a volunteer for the RNLI at Wells, was presented with the award from manufacturer Gates timing belts, which makes automotive specialist tools. To win he had to correctly answer questions in an apprenticeship-related magazine. On Tuesday Andrew Vaux, technical support and training specialist for Gates, visited the college to hand the equipment to Jake and this will now be used in its motor vehicle section, which has well over 100 students on courses. Jake, a second year student, praised the support he is getting from lecturers at the college. He said: “This college course has given me a head start into the motor industry. The experience of the course alone has taught me so much. “This course has helped me to learn the inside and out of cars and engines.” Jake is an apprentice at the college and works at Dunthornes Garage in Wells. And when needed he acts as a lifeboat volunteer in the town as part of the in-shore and all-weather crew. He was praised by course director Paul Champion who said: “Jake has shown what a good student he is. He has shown such a keen attitude towards the course. “I’m sure Jake will go on to succeed in his career and fulfil his full potential. I am pleased and proud to have taught Jake.” Pictured above: Gates to a big prize…Jake Betteridge, right, receives the equipment from Andew Vaux of Gates.
