Students from the CWA Wisbech Campus are pedalling their way to Paris, in aid of fellow CWA student Billy Lee.
The students, who are training to be teaching assistants, are cycling as a team the equivalent distance from Wisbech to Paris, all on exercise cycles at the Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech.
Students Kirsty Thomas (17) of Wisbech and Abbie Wood (17) of March, came up with the idea and soon got the backing of their fellow classmates. All are working as a team to cover the distance of 368.8 miles between them, within two hours.
Kirsty said: “We was really touched with Billy’s story and wanted to do something to help”. Abbey added: “We were so amazed how the whole class got involved”.
Billy Lee (20) of Wisbech St Mary, was studying towards an Electrotechnical Apprenticeship at CWA when he was struck with bone cancer resulting in full leg and half hip amputation.
Everyone taking part is nominating a minimum of £5 and also collecting sponsorship, with a collective target of £200.
The money will go towards a prosthetic limb to give Billy his life back again. The ‘Helix 3D’ leg and hip prosthetic will be an initial cost of £70,000 with 5 yearly servicing and part replacements each time costing £18,500.
Course Director Tara Sage took part in the challenge and said: “I am very proud of Kirsty and Abbie for organising the event and for the rest of the class who soon got involved. Our thanks go to the team at the Hudson Leisure Centre for allowing us to use their facilities to complete the fundraiser.”
