As things cool in this country, eight students from the College of West Anglia have warmed to the task of learning. They have recently returned from four days in Cornella, near Barcelona in Spain, as part of an international project funded by the EU, where temperatures reached 23C at times. And it gave them the chance to give students from other countries an insight into the history of King’s Lynn. The college’s travel and tourism students took part in the Comenius EU Project History in the Present. They visited the school in Cornella, near Barcelona, to attend the sixth project meeting with other students from Turkey, Italy, Germany and Spain. The College of West Anglia students gave a presentation to the other students about the Custom House in King’s Lynn, its origins as a building, progression to becoming a custom house and in more recent times, its role as our tourist information centre. The students considered the value of the building in supporting our heritage and to the local tourism community. They listened to presentations given by each of the other nations in return. As well as the official meeting, the students also enjoyed a guided tour of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona’s incomplete cathedral, a treasure hunt around the gothic quarter working as mixed nationalities and a visit to the 1992 Olympic site at Montjuic. The weather was the biggest bonus, and at 23 degrees it meant that students also enjoyed an unplanned visit to the beach. “It was a very successful visit with students benefiting from the cultural exchange as well as improving their destination knowledge, and understanding of their own heritage,” said Nicola Leadley, course director, BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism.   PICTURE Students and staff relax at the base of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, at the top of Montjuic Hill.
