Vet nurses prepare for exams
With just a few days to go until their final exams, veterinary nurse students at the College of West Anglia Cambridge Campus are busily practicing their 40 timed scenarios which hold the key to success in their level 3 qualification.
Josh Jones, 22, from Newmarket, is the only male in 90 veterinary nurse students across the board at CWA.
He said: “Typically nursing roles are associated with females but as far as I am concerned, if you love animals then you should give the course a go. There are no parts to this course which are gender specific so I don’t see why I am the only male on the course.
“I have a real passion for working with animals, my parents both work with large animals but I have always preferred smaller animals. This course is great because your training is paid for through your place of work and you get the theory through the college, which really helps when it comes to the exams.”
All students have to have found employment in a veterinary surgery before applying for the course based in Milton. Josh works at Swayne and Partners in Newmarket four days a week and attends the college on a day release to learn the theory side of his qualification.
The practical exam includes assessed tasks such as bandaging, gloving and gowning, radiography, lab and theatre work.
Dr Angela Jones of Swayne and Partners Newmarket said: “Josh has been a very good student and has grown into his role at the surgery and now is a very important part of the team.
“He is the only male at the surgery at the moment and integrates really well with the other nurses. When working in the team no one even thinks of his gender, other than complimenting him on his aftershave! He now acts as a role model for the junior members and really enjoys his work and I'm pretty sure never feels out of place. I am very proud of him as our first male nurse at the Newmarket surgery.”
