  • Course Description

    This course combines theory and practical work to a high academic level allowing for progression to working in the industry (including preparation towards self-employment) or university.

    You can combine this course with developing yourself as an athlete as part of our sports academies. Alongside the main qualification you will develop other employment and personal development skills ready for the world of work.

    You will also have opportunities to undertake volunteering and work placement hours as part of your course. There may also be opportunities for you to gain sports coaching and fitness instructor qualifications (funding permitting).

    • Health, Wellbeing and Sport
    • Fitness Skills Development
    • Personal Trainer Skills Development
    • Research Project in Sport (Second Year)
    • Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activities
    • Nutrition for Physical Performance
    • Business and Technology in Personal Training

    You may also complete units in:

    • Sporting Injuries
    • Functional Sports Massage
    • Fitness Testing
    • Fitness Training
  • Entry Requirements

    You will need:

    • 5 or more GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or higher including English Language and Maths


    • A relevant Level 2 qualification to merit grade with good attendance and progress reviews

    How many hours / days per week is this course?

    Full-time courses at the college are generally 3-4 days per week (you may be in an extra day if you are resitting English and/or Maths). All students are expected to complete study hours in the Learning Resource Centre and at least 30 hours work experience on top of their college hours.

    * Certain courses may have additional costs to cover trips or DBS checks, and for some courses you will be expected to purchase additional items such as uniform or equipment.

    Though this course is free for those aged 16-18, there may be additional fees related to the programme, such as additional equipment or uniform, trips, DBS checks and work placement costs. Further information will be sent to all applicants before enrolment.

    Information on Fees and Financial Help

    Learners with an active Education, Health & Care Plan

    If you are aged 19 - 24 at the start of your course and have an active Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), any course up to and including level 3 will be fully-funded by the government. This means you will not have a course fee to pay and any equipment considered essential to complete your course will be provided by the college.

    What qualification will I achieve?

    BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training

    This is a two-year programme. You will work towards the national diploma qualification in the first year of the course and will have the opportunity to work towards the extended diploma in year 2.

    Students aged 16 to 18 who do not already have GCSE qualifications in maths and/or English at grades 4 (C) - 9 (A*) will take qualifications in English and/or maths as part of their vocational study programme - this is a government requirement.

    How is my course assessed?

    This course is assessed through written assignments, practical observations, presentations, professional discussions, VIVAs and professionally produced literature e.g. posters, leaflets, handbooks.

    Each module has its own assessment method(s) which can be made up from those listed above. Each module must be passed to pass the course.

Georgie Lingham

Sport - Personal Training

Georgie is currently studying Level 3 Personal Training at CWA, having previously completed courses in uniformed services and fitness instruction.

“I have always been interested in the fitness side of sport and want to become a personal trainer so that I can help others. CWA was my first choice for further education as I knew that the campus facilities were excellent.”

Georgie has always been an avid rugby player. In 2017, she was recognised as the Eastern Counties women’s rugby team Player of the Year, and has since become a member of Saracens Women’s Rugby club.

Sport Science Level 3

Anya is a visually impaired learner who has exceeded all expectations and requirements as a student at the college’s Sport’s Campus. She continually looks to enhance her work and often completes it before deadline.

Alongside studying at college, Anya is a competitive swimmer, representing her local club and competing at a national level. She takes her physical training seriously and dedicates time to physical training in the college gym daily.
