A Level History students from the College of West Anglia gained a unique insight into one of East Anglia’s most significant historical events during a visit to the King’s Lynn Archives and Stories of Lynn Museum.

The educational trip gave students the opportunity to examine primary source documents relating to the East Anglian witch hunts of 1645, a topic they will study in greater depth during their second year. Access to original historical records provided valuable context and helped bring the subject to life beyond the classroom.

During the visit, students also toured the Stories of Lynn Museum, including the historic gaol cells beneath King’s Lynn Town Hall where individuals accused of witchcraft were once held while awaiting trial.

To further immerse themselves in the period, students explored replica clothing from the 17th century and experienced the gaol cells firsthand, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the social and historical realities of the time.

The visit formed part of the college’s commitment to enriching learning through hands-on experiences and strengthening connections between academic study and local heritage.

Charlotte Insley, Course Director for Pre-Access Humanities and Social Science said, "It was fantastic for our students to have the opportunity to engage directly with original historical documents and experience local history in such an immersive way. Being able to examine primary sources relating to the East Anglian witch hunts and visit the historic gaol cells helped bring a complex topic to life and gave students a deeper appreciation of the people and events they will study in Year 2. Visits like this are invaluable in showing students that history isn’t just something found in textbooks, it’s part of the heritage right on our doorstep.”

The College of West Anglia offers A Level History as part of its broad curriculum, providing students with opportunities to engage with historical sources, develop analytical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the events that have shaped society.
