Author, illustrator, political cartoonist and current Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell went back to the classroom this week to talk to students about his life, his work, drawing Donald Trump and his baptism into social media.
Mr Riddell visited the College of West Anglia (CWA) Wisbech campus as part of his role as Children’s Laureate which is awarded every two years to a writer or illustrator of children's books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field.
Mr Riddell was awarded the prestigious title in June 2015 in honour of his exceptional talent in writing and illustration for works including The Edge Chronicles, a children's book series co-written with Paul Stewart and illustrated by Riddell. Set in the fictional world known as "The Edge", the books have been praised for Chris's beautifully detailed line drawings and the unique nature of their collaborative writing process.
Mr Riddell who is also a political cartoonist for The Observer said: “I do a lot of talking in schools and libraries but what sometimes get overlooked the further education colleges and students who are studying the arts. I like whenever possible to come into colleges like CWA as their students are the future, they will be doing what I’m doing in 10-15 years’ time so it is great to talk to them at the beginning of their careers.”
CWA art student Rachelle Lubi-Hallam, who met Mr Riddell at a book signing three years ago and has been correspondence ever since, helped organise the visit to the college to talk to her class. Rachelle said: “Chris’s visit to college was a real honour and a real creative boost. Chris told us to carry a sketchbook wherever we go and just draw which I will definitely now do. He said to draw wherever, and whenever you can.”
