Our catering and hospitality students achieved great success recently at one of the UK’s largest live culinary competitions.
The Wessex Salon Culinare, which took place at Brockenhurst college in the New Forest, Hampshire, saw CWA whisk away competitors with their cooking skills and collect a batch of medals.
The popular event, which is held in association with The Craft Guild of chefs, has grown in stature over the years and is a fantastic platform for all chefs, but especially student chefs, to get a first taste of competition experience.
It was the first time the college has taken on a competition of this size with 11 students competing over 18 different events.
Events ranged from afternoon tea to novelty cake making, risotto challenge to pork main course and cupcakes to fish filleting. In the restaurant class of the competition, competitors were required to show their napkin folding and cocktail making skills.
In total CWA picked up 2 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze medals plus
11 certificates of merit.
“This is a fantastic achievement, as this was a competition that we hadn't taken on in such magnitude before and we are already making plans of how we become more successful at next year’s event” said catering & hospitality tutor Jonathan Boyall.
The college is waiting to hear it has been successful in progressing through to the World Skills eliminator which will take place at Colchester later this month. Winners from this will proceed to the World skills national finals which will be held in Birmingham during November.
