College of West Anglia Students are encouraged to ‘Go for Gold’

Seven College of West Anglia (CWA) students will be competing in the 2022 WorldSkills UK finals.

WorldSkills UK is the nation’s largest skills and careers event. It brings together apprentices, students and young people from across the country to vie to be the best in their chosen skills. The competitions, which run in over 62 skills areas, encourage young people to be ambitious in their pursuit of excellence, while equipping them with life-long skills.

This year, over 5300 people registered to take part in more than 60 WorldSkills UK competitions from all around the UK. CWA students represent one third of all finalists from the East of England (24 in total) and more than the total number of finalists from all of the other colleges combined!

From CWA in the category of Digital Media Production, Chloe Pennell, Claire Arnold, Amber Thomas and Gustas Jurevicius will be competing. Electrical Installation will see Lyam Thorpe and Brandon Campbell competing and in Foundation Skills: Horticulture, April Tawn will be competing.

The 2022 National Finals will take place in venues across the UK, week commencing 14 November. Medallists and those that are highly commended will have the chance of qualifying for the GB Squad, with the chance to compete internationally in the Skills Olympics in France in 2024.

On 18th October, Principal David Pomfret hosted a ‘Go for Gold’ reception at College of West Anglia Novus restaurant in King’s Lynn to celebrate the success of the competitors in reaching the finals.

David Pomfret said:

WorldSkills is acknowledged as the skills Olympics of vocational training, challenging young professionals to be the very best in their field. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the achievement of the seven CWA students who have secured their place in the national finals of WorldSkills 2022 and supporting them as they ‘Go for Gold’. They have done fantastically well and should be immensely proud of themselves”.
