The College of West Anglia has added a brand new apprenticeship to its extensive offer. The Apprenticeship in Youth Work has been validated to fill the void of recognised qualifications for people who are working towards being youth support workers. The apprenticeship is available at both intermediate and advanced levels and is about providing young people with challenges and new experiences - allowing them to be creative, active and have fun. The qualification in youth work is intended to support the skills and knowledge needed to become a competent assistant youth support worker. The level 2 apprenticeship is aimed towards those already working in a youth work environment or those new to the role, in an assisting or supporting role under supervision. It is suitable for those who may have limited experience of youth work and want an access route to a qualification while learning and developing experience in the role. The level 3 qualification in youth work practice is intended to support the skills and knowledge needed to become a competent youth work practitioner. It is aimed at preparing a learner to lead youth work in a variety of youth work settings and to specialise in specific areas that are particularly relevant to the work that they undertake. The role of youth work is to help young people learn about themselves, others and society, through various informal educational activities. Youth workers typically work with young people aged between 11 and 25. At the end of the apprenticeship, students will be youth support workers - in a good position to take the next step in their career as a youth worker, with qualifications that most employers will support you in doing on a part-time basis. Every young person has a unique situation so you could be doing various things such as offering counselling and support, developing projects that tackle issues or even organising activities like sports and drama. Apprentices will learn to come up with creative ways to reach young people and be able to build relationships with them. They will also learn the administrative side to youth work too. This might include helping manage volunteers or part-time staff, helping apply for grants, keeping records of the youth work and networking with other professionals including social workers, teachers and probation officers.
