College of West Anglia student, Sam Higgins has successfully completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award, marking the culmination of a journey that took him all the way to Costa Rica.
Sam, who studied Law, Maths, and Business A Levels at the King’s Lynn campus, chose the college because it was local and offered him the flexibility and independence he was looking for in his studies. Alongside his academic achievements, Sam embraced the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, pushing himself beyond his comfort zone and developing vital life skills.
As part of his residential section in Costa Rica, Sam joined a team of international volunteers where he took part in both environmental conservation and cultural exploration. His work involved helping rescue turtles and butterflies, as well as conducting research on the rainforest and its inhabitants. The experience, he said, was transformative.
‘What I enjoyed most about the Duke of Edinburgh's Award was leaving my comfort zone and spending time with new people while gaining new skills and personal development,” said Sam.
‘My advice to anyone starting their Duke of Edinburgh's award would be to enter it with an open mind and be ready to work hard in order to achieve the Gold Award.’
Throughout his journey, Sam credits his tutors at the college for their encouragement and support.
‘My tutors at CWA supported me every step of the way and encouraged me to take a risk – something that has really paid off,” he added.
Looking ahead, Sam plans to pursue a career as an officer either in the Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force, continuing to build on the discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills he honed through his studies and his Duke of Edinburgh experience.
