Staff from King’s Lynn based-firm, ECS Computers, visited the College of West Anglia on Safer Internet Day to educate and raise awareness of staying safe online.

Safer Internet Day was celebrated in February, when joined forces from across the world worked "Together for a better internet".

Morgan Jenkin, Marketing Executive from ECS Computers delivered an informative lecture on a variety of different subjects including social media, hacking, identity, spotting misinformation and mental health. Morgan discussed the positive opportunities of digital technologies to learn and exchange.

Yet, Morgan made students aware of the potential risks of to users, such as privacy concerns, cyberbullying and exposure to potentially harmful content, discussing the students’ privacy settings on social media channels and other apps, such as Google Maps, which traces everywhere you go throughout the day.

One student said:

“I was shocked at how much information companies such Google have about you. It will definitely make me think more about what data companies have access to and how they might use it.”

Morgan Jenkin from ECS Computers said:

It was wonderful to talk to the students today on Safer Internet Day to cover all the ways in which they can stay safe online. ECS Computers have loved the chance to be involved.”

Another student said:

“I learnt about the different ways that you can manage online bullying. I thought it was particularly interesting because we got to tell out stories of something we can relate to. It was informative, and they know what to do and what not to do online.”

Nick Bartlett, Learning Resource Co-ordinator and organiser of the event, said:

“The internet is used daily by all ages and groups, this session taught students and staff right from wrong and how to prevent this from happening to others, such as friends and family. Social media has a massive impact in everyday lives and students need to be made aware of what is safe and what isn’t.

ECS Computers have made students more aware of their daily usage online and we are very grateful for them for coming along to the event.”
