CWA foundation students and staff from the college’s King’s Lynn campus have been adapting well to online and home learning, undertaking a number of projects from gardening to wellbeing and cooking.

Janine Palmer, Bridge to Engagement Course Director, said:

“As my learners are highly vulnerable, contact with them is extremely frequent, the Learning Support Officers (LSOs) are also in regular contact with our learners to provide emotional support.

I am making individual templates for individual students to help them start their work. I have set up many areas on LEARN with English, Maths, Work Readiness, Home Learning and a 60-day well-being challenge.”

The 60-day wellbeing challenges focusses on a series of mini-tasks aimed at supporting learners’ wellbeing. Daily tasks include sending letters to residents of local care homes, writing down five things that they are thankful for in life and making a playlist of top ten favourite songs to send to a friend.

CWA Course Director, Karen Soehnle, said:

“I have been communicating with my group through email and weekly zoom meetings.  My pre-entry students and parents are an important link in this process.”

Some groups are completing a COVID-19-time capsule to recognise the historical time that we’re going through and recording the special memories, journal, photos, centred around focussing on the positivity and the sense of community spirit felt at the moment. As part of this, students celebrated Captain Tom Moore’s landmark birthday last week, making birthday cards for the 100-year-old veteran. Students also learnt about his early life, career and his fundraising efforts to date.

She added: “Well done to all our students for making cards for Captain Tom, I am so proud of them all.”

Finding Independence student, Owen Welham, has created a card and poster to thank his postman after having a conversation with his mum about how hard he has been working recently.

Course director of the Developing Independence group, Becky Gathercole, recognised the important role of constant communication and coordinated efforts of parents, teaching and support staff and learners at the moment:

“We have weekly group Zoom sessions which all of my 6 learners and their parents join. We talk about their week and what work they have done for me and what practical skills they have been practising at home, e.g. cooking, cleaning, gardening. The group thoroughly enjoy these sessions as they get to see each other and staff and this is so important for their well-being.”

I send them a weekly email with activities, links and resources attached for maths, English, cookery and practical and creativity.  I set them a creative task every week and so far, they have made bug houses, papier mache bowls, woven paper mats and butterfly feeders. Their current challenge is to grow a broad bean so I have posted seeds to all of them and a Broad Bean Growing Diary.”

Karen Soehnle, course director of the Finding Independence group has challenged learners to a sunflower competition, sending out sunflower seeds. Learners have potted and tended to their sunflowers, filling out a daily sunflower diary, measuring how much they have grown, as well as creating their own watering cans this week as part of their personal progress unit.

Karen said:

We have made pots together from newspapers during our zoom meeting. I have asked our learners to grow them and map their progress daily.”

Student, Owen Welham is ‘very excited’ about the project and starting to see the sunflowers grow.

The group have also been challenged to build their own ‘Bug Hotel’ to create an insect friendly environment, where learners could learn more about native wildlife and insects, how to care for the environment and craft skills.

One student, Ben Daniels, created his bug house with his mum, Amanda.
