Graphic design students at the King’s Lynn campus have been learning about higher education opportunities and industry expectations thanks to the Norwich University of the Arts (NUA). NUA graphics course leader Martin Schooley visited the college to give a talk to students about courses available at the university and the difference career pathways that they offer: Graphic Design, Graphic Communication and Design for Publishing. He gave learners an insight into not only the course content but also life as an NUA student and what to expect from a career in the industry. Following the presentation students took part in an alphabet book design, illustrating letters with simple imagery. The challenge, however, was to create their pictures using only circular shapes or circular segments such as semi-circles.

First year student Mason said: “The task we were set was really interesting. It was great to have the talk about higher education, too. University isn’t something that I had considered. Martin has really opened my eyes about the options available to me after my vocational course, such as a degree or higher-level apprenticeship. Second year student Jacob, who has applied to study at NUA, added: “It was a great opportunity to learn more about not only the course that I’ve applied for, but the university as a whole. I now know what to bring, expect and prepare for when I begin higher education”.

Martin said: “It was good to come out and see the students today. As course leader of graphics at NUA I am naturally proud of what they’re doing - they’ve been fantastic at responding to the task and have an impressive work rate, producing ideas very quickly. This has been my first visit to CWA but I’m hoping it won’t be my last!”
