College of West Anglia Principal, David Pomfret, went ‘Back to the Floor’ at Palm Paper to work alongside CWA apprentices in a series of events that celebrated National Apprenticeship Week 2020 (NAW).

NAW is a nationwide annual celebration of apprenticeships that bring the whole apprenticeship community together to celebrate the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy.

David joined CWA apprentices Ben Fuller and Kian Auker at the Saddlebow site. Both apprentices are in the process of completing Maintenance Operations and Engineering Technician apprenticeship standards. CWA level 4 engineering apprentice, Sam Kent, also works for the company. The Palm Group employs over 150 apprentices and 4,000 staff across Europe, with the King’s Lynn operations consisting of 195 staff and 7 apprentices.

David spent the day with the apprentices learning about various aspects of their apprenticeship, job roles and responsibilities and the running of the business operation.

CWA principal, David Pomfret, said: “I have particularly enjoyed returning back to the floor to work alongside our talented young apprentices, Kian Auker and Ben Fuller, at Palm Paper during National Apprenticeship Week 2020. CWA have a strong history of delivering apprenticeships and our apprenticeship provision has recently been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Currently, CWA have over 900 active apprenticeships and apprentices like Kian & Ben play a vital role in bringing business and education together to ensure we create commercially aware and work-ready employees.”

“Apprenticeships are an extremely useful way for people to gain the skills and knowledge to aid them in building a career. Palm Paper and the college have been particularly supportive and want you to achieve as much as possible. I learnt so much during my apprenticeship and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”

Matthew Gray, Head of Mechanical Engineering at Palm Paper, said:

“We have supported apprentices from CWA for a number of years. Apprentices likes Ben and Kian are essential to the success of the business and ensuring we invest in having a skilled workforce both now and in the future.”

Andrew Gedge, Assistant Principal Quality and Students, visited Peckover Primary School to work alongside CWA apprentice, Sam Fisher who is completing his Level 3 standard for Teaching Assistants.  Sam led the session and was talking about shapes with the children, learning their names and identifying them in the outdoor environment.  The small wooded area alongside the school is a fantastic space to do this, enabling the children to demonstrate creativity and imagination alongside the current terminology.
