Uniformed and public service students from the King’s Lynn campus have experienced the basics of life as a firefighter, being put through their paces at King’s Lynn Fire Station in North Lynn.
Retained Heacham firefighter Guy Tavner organised the day. Students were given an introduction to Norfolk Fire Service, explaining how the service works, what they do and the kit used on exercise. They got to observe and the use the hose reels off the appliance, received a tour of the station and some had a chance to try out the Breathing Apparatus Chamber.
As well as the tour and exploration of equipment, students also took part in the Fire Service Fitness Test for Entry - with most of them sailing the endurance tests, easily fulfilling the requirements for entry.
Students wore full Fire PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and completed a ladder climb and lift, casualty and equipment drags, and equipment assembly among other test components.
Jack Hayes, a retained firefighter in King’s Lynn and staff member at CWA, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the day. It was smiles all round and hopefully it has given them a good insight into what the fire service does and the requirements needed to get on board.”
