This week, Hair and Beauty students at the College of West Anglia had the opportunity to hear an inspiring and eye-opening talk from the Ferry Project, a local charity dedicated to supporting the homeless and vulnerable in the community.
The talk was delivered by John, a former resident of the Ferry Project who now works for the organisation, giving back to the very community that once supported him. John shared his deeply personal story of how he became homeless after the breakdown of his marriage. Moving to Wisbech to be closer to his children, he found himself unable to secure employment and eventually living on the streets.
John spoke candidly about his struggles, describing how he relied on alcohol to get through his days and scavenged for food in bins. Despite his dire situation, he was hesitant to seek help due to negative perceptions of hostels. However, after a traumatic incident where he was violently attacked and ended up in Hinchingbrooke Hospital, he was encouraged to seek support from the Ferry Project.
That decision marked a turning point in his life. With the help of the Ferry Project, John overcame his challenges and now dedicates his time to supporting others facing homelessness, demonstrating the transformative power of compassion and community.
John reminded students that homelessness can happen to anyone, saying, “You’re only a few pay packets away from being homeless.”
