Installation and Maintenance Electrician - Apprenticeship - Level 3

This 4-year apprenticeship course will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical capabilities to become a qualified electrician. As a qualified electrician you will install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments including automated production systems.

Electricians carry out installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of low voltage (less than 1000 volts) electrical and electronic devices and appliances. Electricians work in both indoor and outdoor settings. Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as crime and fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies.

You will be required to complete a work-based evidence portfolio in addition to attending college one day per week. You will complete mandatory weekly 20% off the job time logging on your portfolio. This is the recording of all new learning undertaken within contracted working hours. You will also be required to access and complete further Maths & English modules throughout the duration of this course.

You will need

• A suitable employer who is available to start you as an apprentice
• 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including English and maths) or;
• A relevant level 2 qualification (such as our Electrical Installation course) which has prepared you for an apprenticeship, including GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above

An interview will be required to identify your potential, commitment and motivation to achieve the apprenticeship. We will also use the interview as an opportunity to discuss your employer. You will be required to complete an initial assessment to show your ability to complete a further level 2 qualification in English and maths.

During your interview you will also be asked to complete an aptitude test.

How many hours / days per week is this course?

The majority of this apprenticeship will take place at the workplace. You will attend college one day per week on day release at our King's Lynn campus.

What qualification will I achieve?

• City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification, (Installation) or (Maintenance).

How is my course assessed?

Methods of assessment include:

• on-line testing
• practical and written examinations
• written assignments
• portfolio-based project work
• workplace assessments.

The end point assessment to complete the apprenticeship will be the three-day AM2S test. The course is assessed using formative assessment in the form of a logbook, portfolio of evidence and a research assignment. Once the record of achievement is completed an end assessment comprising of multiple choice or short answer questions, practical tasks and an interview is required.
