Students impress at canoe race!
Students on the Anglian Water sponsored courses were invited to the Anglian Water Water Aid event, held at Rutland Regatta, which raised over £94,000.
The teams were challenged with building one concrete and two duct tape canoes to enter in to the regatta. They did extremely well on the day and came second in the concrete canoe race.
It was a short-lived race for the duct tape crew, whose canoes capsized at the start line. The concrete canoe had better luck, it floated and arrived at the start with great surprise from many of the attendees! The team got off to a good start but soon tired. Nonetheless, they finished the course and came an impressive second place!
Dale Evans, Director of @one Alliance, said: “It was great to see the CWA students playing an enthusiastic and successful part in this year’s Regatta – and second place in the concrete canoe event on a first attempt was an amazing effort.”
The day did not end there. Whilst trying to get the canoe back to the landing area, disaster struck and the concrete canoe sunk. However, everyone pulled together and managed to rescue it from the bottom of the reservoir.
Aside from the race itself, students challenged CWA staff to some of the events on offer; this started with tug of war which ended with everyone in a muddy heap on the grass and a construction win. Then came the climbing wall where the learners beat the staff by getting up the wall in the fastest time whilst competing on the hardest wall.
Not only was the day a fun off-timetable experience, but also a fantastic networking opportunity for the students, meeting directors and managers from Anglian Water’s Alliances partner companies. Some learners managed to find work experience over the summer holidays with their Alliance partner companies.
Simon Marriott, lecturer in construction at CWA said: “It was a great day all-in-all and the learners had real fun. It was a fantastic networking opportunity – we are all looking forward to next year.”
David Newsome, Collaborative Skills Programme Manager for Anglian Water’s Alliances, said: “The students have already been invited to attend next year and the staff are looking forward to seeing their new canoe designs.”
