Nelson Academy 1 Nelson Academy at Downham Market have become the first primary school to join the CWA Academy Trust. It was a happy time for members of the school council, who joined in the photocall for the media, proudly showing off the new school uniform and signage, which replaced those of the former Clackclose Community Primary School. Present at the photocall were David Pomfret, chief executive of the CWA Academy Trust and Louise Ward, principal of Nelson Academy. It is the first primary school to join the CWA Academy Trust family of academies and shares the same commitment to raising achievement, collaboration and support to enable all the pupils to achieve their potential. The academy is named after Lord Nelson, whom, it is said, attended his first school and forged friendships in Downham Market. Its new name was a clear favourite suggestion from the consultation process with stakeholders, including staff, students and parents. David Pomfret said it was an exciting time for the school, with children and parents 100% committed to the academy which has now joined a family that can all learn from each other. Principal Louise Ward said the pupils, aged from three to eleven, were wearing their new uniforms with pride. She said they had said it made them feel more grown up and important. Major improvements had been made at the 355-pupil academy over the last year and she looked forward to working with other primaries as well as high schools. Nelson Academy is a non-denominational school which provides education for approximately 350 children aged 3 to 11 in Downham Market, Downham West, Salters Lode, Barroway Drove and Nordelph. A number of parents from surrounding villages also choose to send their children to the school. Clackclose Community Primary School was named after the ancient Clackclose Hundred, which provided education for nearly 130 years.
