Climb sees the end of foreign exchange visit
On Saturday 27 February, the uniformed services department took two Finnish and three Dutch exchange learners to the Yorkshire Dales to experience some of the country’s finer countryside.
Students set off with clear blue skies to climb Whernside, the first of the 'Three Peaks'. After a short halt on the summit, they set off to climb Ingleborough, which the Dutch called the “ice mountain” due to it being covered with a thin layer of snow and ice. Impressively, they reached the summit by 14:00.
The following day the group climbed Pen Y Ghent - the third and final peak. It took 50 minutes from leaving the mini bus to reach the summit Triangulation Pillar.
Lee Mallott, CWA uniformed services, said: “All the learners performed extremely well considering they do not have hills and mountains on the same scale we do."
The exchange students – who have been with CWA for a month – have been submerged in all areas of the uniformed services curriculum during their stay; including fitness testing at the CWA Sports Campus and a 1.5 mile run, multi stage fitness test.
They have had exposure to UK military forces including Royal Navy Submarine service, the Army and the RAF Regiment as part of their stay and also completed the annual CWA log run and the NCS programme during February half-term.
CWA students will make the exchange visit on Sunday 20 March to both Holland and Finland to experience life in their armed services and security sectors.
Mr Mallott said: “I have been involved with the exchange programme for the last three years and they go from strength to strength offering more and more options for all our learners to go and investigate life and work in other European countries.”
