David Dein Tells Students to ‘Stick Their Necks Out’ In Life
The CWA Sports Campus has played host to public speaker David Dein, former Chairman of Arsenal F.C. and the Football Association.
David gave an insprirational talk to 130 sports students from CWA and the CWA Academy Trust schools, about his career and British football.
David Dein is a football entrepreneur and businessman, who joined the Arsenal Board in 1983 and was made Vice-Chairman in the same year. He also rose to Vice-Chairman of the Football Association, and has served on numerous UEFA and FIFA Committees.
David spoke passionately about his career and gave a humorous insight into his life as a key player the world of football and the development of the Premier League in 1992.
David explained the difficulties of running a present day football club, trying to inject modern business attitudes, while keeping its traditional values. Something which sometimes proved controversial saying “My philosophy in life is to be like a turtle – if you want to get anywhere in life, you have to stick your neck out!”
David spoke of future developments within the game including a separate time keeper and how he had been at the forefront of many of the important changes in football including the introduction of Goal Line Technology and ‘vanishing foam’. “I effectively became a travelling salesman for a time, trying to convince the FA of its benefits” said David.
David told the students that Premiership footballers were only successful if they applied the right ‘behaviour and attitude’, regardless of skill level and that if the audience were to adopt the same positive behaviour they would go far in life, in whatever they do.
David was President of the Arsenal Ladies Team, which has consistently been the best in the land.
He was the man who had the foresight to bring Arsene Wenger to Arsenal in 1996. During David’s reign, the Club won:
The League x 5
The FA Cup x 5
The UEFA Cup Winners Cup x 1
The League Cup x 2
The Community Shield x 5
A total of 18 trophies!
