Uniformed Services Students on 10 Mile Charity Kit March

Uniformed Services students from CWA have packed their bags and hit the path in the name of charity.
On 24 March, two groups of students, one from the King’s Lynn campus and one from Isle campus in Wisbech, completed a 20 mile relay from Holme-next-the-Sea to Anmer and back along the Pedders Way footpath.
CWA tutor Rob Cooke led the Lynn team 10 miles from Holme to Anmer where the team handed over their heavy 40lb kit bags to the Isle campus team led by fellow tutor Adrian Kent, who completed the route in reverse.
The task is designed to replicate the pre-parachute selection of the RAF, where troops must complete a 10 mile march carrying a 35lb rucksack, weapon and water. The exercise must be completed within 1 hour 50 minutes in order to pass the highly demanding fitness test. The students were not required to complete in that time but all completed in little over 2 hours, over undulating terrain and with brief water stops along the way.
“The reason for the exercise is to simulate troops being parachuted at a 10 mile radius from a war zone, before carrying their gear to the front line. The difference is that today the students get to rest at the end of 10 mile trek, whereas in the real scenario, you would then be expected to go straight into battle with the enemy,” said Rob Cooke, uniformed services lecturer.
The teams have raised close to £1000 for the Fire Fighters Charity which supports fire fighters and their families.
